Our Approach

Individualized instruction in a group setting to maximize learning

Each class at Green Forest Art Studio begins with the instructor introducing the subject matter and materials to the entire class. Students then receive individualized instruction tailored to their own skill level, learning new techniques and exploring concepts in greater depth as their understanding improves. This approach maximizes the total amount of instruction time for each student while also allowing students to learn from one another.

Students should be allowed to experiment with a variety of art materials

At Green Forest Art Studio, students explore a variety of art materials including charcoal, ink, oil pastels, soft pastels, watercolors, acrylics, and oils. This variety expands the artistic possibilities and allows a child to explore different media and how they behave. No child is expected to become the master of any or all of these media, but the experience with each helps them expand their artistic voice and opens up greater appreciation for artwork by others found in museums or created by their fellow classmates.

Artwork is an expression of how and what each artist sees

Teachers at Green Forest Art Studio encourage artistic expression by allowing children to use the media they have experimented with in ways that are truly unique. Our instructors make sure that children know that drawings are not always supposed to look like photographs, but are each person’s view of the world. Children’s drawings become expressions of how and what each child sees. Artistic risk taking, experimentation, and the development of meaning are intrinsic to making art, and children can begin to understand these concepts through their own artistic efforts.

One must first learn to see before one can learn to draw or paint.

Students are taught how to directly observe objects in their surroundings and the techniques required to accurately render qualities such as form, color, lighting, shadow, reflection, texture, proportion, and perspective.

Art History enhances student’s enjoyment of art in everyday experience

Our students develop a historical understanding of great artists, works, movements, and art from different cultures. Our program also covers the vocabulary of art, different elements of art and principles of art design.
